The perception of movement is illusory. In addition, if we fixate on it, the image appears to vibrate. This phenomenon, called tremor, is due to the imperceptible tugging of the eye muscles. If we stare at the object longer, the bright source then begins to move off center and wander off. This phenomenon is called drift. We are aware of this drift until a quick correction is made to force the eye back to the center. This quick correction is called flick. Tremor, drift, and flick—the first three types of eye movement—ensure that an image is continuously refreshing the retina’s photoreceptors and avoiding image adaptation.

Immersing the film in an aqueous acid solution (acetic acid) immediately halts the film development process. The latent image is then visible but is not permanent. If the film were exposed to light at this stage, the entire image would blacken, since the shadow areas would then react to the light. This is the classic Wedgwood image-fading problem. To resolve it, the film needs to be fixed. The fixer is generally sodium hyposulphite, or hypo for short. It dissolves the milky silver halides that did not react with light and makes those areas transparent.

The vestibular system detects three axes of head movement: up and down motion as in nodding, side to side shaking, and tilting to the side. This is very much like the three-axes co- 31 3D LIGHTING 32 ordinate system used in 3D graphics, the x-axis, the y-axis, and the z-axis. This system is most sensitive to changes in acceleration and orientation. The head rotation, together with eye tracking, gives us the information on how fast things move. The vestibular system functions like a biological 3D gyroscope with a built-in accelerometer.
